preheat the oven to 190c/gas 5
and put a small container of water into the oven to create steam and stop the bread drying out
mix the dry ingredients together and make a well in the centre.
Break the egg into the well. Using your fingertips, gradually work in some of the flour and pour in the butter milk until all has been absorbed. The dough should be soft but not too sticky- add a little flour if it is - and don't overwork it
make the dough into a loaf shape. place on a baking tray and bake in the oven for 1 hour. leave to cool on a wire rack
